General Rules

This year the SUNY FingerLakes Wellness Challenge will be an 8-week competition. The Spring 2017 dates have not yet been determined.

A Point System has been developed to calculate how many points a person can earn each day. Players participating in the Wellness Challenge will track the following on a daily basis:

  • Total Steps (using a pedometer)
  • Physical Activities that you would consider true exercise
  • Losing % of Body Weight (based on a formula)
  • Eating a Combination of Fruits and Vegetables each day
  • Drinking 8 cups of water each day
  • Bonus Points

Players track their daily total steps using a pedometer. Also each day, players will keep track of their non-step activities in the form of physical exercise. Their steps and physical activity earn POINTS for each day.

Players should “strive for five” and earn points by eating five or more fruits and veggies! And new to the Wellness Challenge this year is drinking 8 cups (8 oz. each) of water each day.

Players can also earn points by losing weight at the end of the Challenge. A player enter in their initial weigh-in at the beginning of the Wellness Challenge, and then at the end of the 8-weeks, the player then weights-out. Points are earned for losing a percentage of your body weight (not total weight).

Activity Sheets will be provided to record your steps and exercises. These Activity Sheets are for your records only to help you remember and record your activities each day.

Team Captains

It is the Team Captain’s responsibility to collect each team members’ Activity Sheet every week (if required) and record the results on our website. They also need to get everyone ready and excited to participate! If so desired, the Team Captain can also delegate each team member to enter in their own statistics if they wish. Each person in the Wellness Challenge will be provided a unique password to log into their account and enter their own activities on our website.

How much does it cost?

The cost to participate varies per individual school. Each school is responsible for collecting their own fees from their employees.

How do you play?

Each player has two goals. The first is to strive for at least 10,000 steps each day (2,000 steps is approximately one mile). The second is to track any physical activity and exercise routines that you normal would do. There are also points if you choose to participate in the Weight Loss challenge and earn bonus points.

Each player will need a pedometer at the beginning of the competition and each player will be asked to keep track of their total steps and physical activity and enter them on their personal Activity Worksheet. Make sure you purchase a pedometer before the competition starts! Your school may also be able to provide them to their employees at the start of the Wellness Challenge.

The Activity Worksheet will be collected each Monday morning of the following week by your Team Captain and a new one will be provided to you for the new week. (Blank forms will also be available on our website for download as well).

Your scores are recorded by the Team Captain on our website and each player will be able to see their total points. Your numbers will also be added to your team’s total score. (If you wish, you can enter your activities directly using your account password.)

To track the weight-loss aspect of the competition, there will an initial weigh-in by your Campus Nurse or other Challenge official. Outside recordings of weight will not be allowed – this is to keep it fair and honest. Total privacy will be provided and no one will know your weight. It will NOT be shown to anyone. Don’t worry, there is nothing to worry about :-).

Bonus points are also given for having your blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol levels checked by our campus nurse. You can also earn bonus points by eating servings of fruits and vegetables every day, participating in events, and more. More more information, please see our section on Bonus Points.

How many winners are there?

By keeping track of each player’s points, they are recorded and added to their teammate’s points. Each team will compete only against those in their League Division (optional). Your team will only compete against the other teams in their League. EACH SCHOOL WILL RUN THEIR OWN CHALLENGE and decide who the winners may be. In general, the following would be recognized:

  • League Division Winners
  • Overall Wellness Challenge Team Winner
  • The Team with the most points
  • The Individual with the most points
  • The Individual who loses the highest % of body weight
  • The Individual with most total steps

Earning Points Based on Time – not calories burned

You will earn points on various exercise routines based on how long you exercise so everyone earns the same amount of points. For example, if you do 30 minutes on an elliptical you will earn the same amount of points as everyone else who does the same 30 minutes. If you use the Stair Master for 10 minutes you will earn the same amount of points as everyone else who does the same 10 minutes. Whether you weigh 100 lbs or 250 lbs – it will all be the same. For tracking steps you will need to use a pedometer, fitness tracker or a pedometer application on your smart phone.

Eat Fruits and Vegetables – Earn Points

Healthy eating will earn you points! So if you “strive for five” by eating at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day you will earn points. Can’ t eat five servings? That is OK – we will cut you some slack and you’ll be able to earn points for eating 3, 4 or 5 or more servings.

Drink Water – Earn Points

You can also earn points by hydrating and drinking water each day. Try to drink at least 8 cups (8 oz each) for a total for 64 oz per day. You may visit the bathroom a lot more, but the points will be worth it.

Water is your body’s principal chemical component and makes up about 60 percent of your body weight. Every system in your body depends on water. Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don’t have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired.

Division-Based Leagues

The Wellness Challenge will be divided into Leagues (option per school). Instead of your team competing against all the teams, each will be placed into “divisions”. Teams only need to compete for first place in their own division. During your school’s Kick-Off Event teams will be randomly drawn and placed in their division.
